The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is required of all applicants whose native language is not English. The requirement for the TOEFL can be waived only for applicants who will have received a baccalaureate degree, or its foreign equivalent, prior to matriculation at Yale, from a university or college where English is the primary language of instruction. Applicants must have studied in residence at the baccalaureate institution for at least three (3) years to receive the waiver. A waiver will not be granted on the basis of an advanced degree M.A./M.S. or Ph.D) from any institution. TOEFL scores must be sent electronically to Yale University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (institution code 3987). We suggest a minimum TOEFL score of 100.

The International English Language Test System (IELTS) test may be substituted for the TOEFL. Yale University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences only accepts scores submitted electronically by the IELTS test center via the IELTS Electronic Score Download Service. We do not accept paper Test Report Forms nor do we verify Test Report Forms (TRF’s). The institutional code for IELTS is 1424. You must request to have the scores made available to: Yale University C Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (also known as the Office of Graduate Admissions).
