This course aims to explore the historical evolution of world journalism, and to sort out the regularities in major countries` journalistic development. It will also familiarize the students with the important people, events and thoughts in world journalism history, as well as the key issues related with information and communication in contemporary world.

News Editing
This course focuses on: the role of news editor, the positioning of news media, proposal for news report, newspaper layout design, and how to select the press release. It emphasizes the main content and internal logic of contemporary news editing and researches a series of the latest related problems. The purpose of this class is helping students understand the relationship between format changing of contemporary media and the responsibilities of the news editors. Also, this class is helpful in recognizing the basic characteristics and development trends of contemporary news editing and getting familiar with workflow of news editing. The students are supposed to have a solid foundation in news editing theory and be able to work in related field preliminarily after taking this class.
News Gathering and Writing
This course provides pre-professional training in newsgathering, news writing for print and online publications, and editing. The course also develops skills in headline writing, layout, and newspaper production with the potential for experiencing involvement on student newspaper or area print publications as well as Web submission.
Theories of Mediated Communication
Mediated communication is at the center of human life in the era of modernity, globalization and digitalization, the study of which is therefore important for intelligent understanding of contemporary social life. The core mission of this class is to introduce theories about media technology, media production and media use, and help students to understand how media and society interact and influence each other. There are four major elements or aspects in the media ecology of contemporary society: media technology, media organizations, media content (text) and media users. The four aspects are interconnected to each other, and together they form a circle of mediated communication.
A History of Advertising in China
This curriculum is a basic theory course. The course is divided into three plates: ancient, modern, and contemporary advertising in China, and teaching the history of advertising development in China since ancient times systematically. The major contents for the ancient and modern advertising activities in China, the establishment and introduction of western notion of advertising and modern advertising agency system since the late Qing Dynasty, the early changes of the image of Chinese advertising, and the advertising after the cultural revolution. The course will focus on the advertising since reform and opening up and the advertising of 1911-1949 rather than China ancient advertising, in order to strengthen the study of history and reality associated with the development of advertising industry at present.
A History of World Advertising
This curriculum is a basic theory course. The course is divided into three plates: ancient, modern, and contemporary advertising in the US, Europe and Japan, and teaching the history of advertising development in the world, since ancient times systematically. The major contents for the ancient and modern advertising activities in the world, the establishment of the modern notion of advertising and modern advertising agency system since the Enlightenment, the early changes of the image of foreign advertising, and the advertising and social change. The course will focus on the advertising development since the enlightenment and the comparison of advertising industries among the countries, in order to strengthen the study of history and reality associated with the development of advertising industry at present.
Communication Research Method
The course aims to train the students to discover, observation and analysis the communication activities. There are three parts of the course: methodology, observation and data collection method, and analysis techniques.

International Communication
The course introduces several aspects of international communication: the historical evolution, features of different periods and the regularity of its development and progress. It will also present the basic component parts of international communication -- communication subjects, communication means, information flow, audience and the effect, and discuss how those elements vary with the transition of world politics and international relations. Through case studies, this course explores the methods and approaches to effective international communication, and thus provides references for China’s communication abroad.
Introduction to Network Communication
This is an introductory course on new media and online communication. Specifically, the course covers the following topics: new media’s challenge on traditional media and communication theory, new media’s social effects on individuals and organizations, the strategies of marketing and PR in the new media field; problems and issues in the new media field, such as online rumor, online fraud, online violence, etc.
Media Economics
The courses aim at teaching students to critically assess the role of media in societies and to learn theoretical concepts that help understanding the performance and the evolution of media. The aim of the course in particular is to make students aware of the main economic theories, mainstream and alternative, in order to understand innovation and trends in media industries and the rationale for media industries’ regulation.
Media Operation and Management
The course will emphasize three subjects:(a)the characteristics of market, product, customer and business model of the media industry;(b)the management of strategy, human resource,marketing, technology and finance in media firm;(c)the recently trends within the industry such as globalization, convergence and cross-media synergies.
Psychology of Advertisement
Psychology in advertising has long been used as an effective means to persuade the consumers to choose a product or service. This course will provide an understanding of the concepts and principals of advertising psychology, and we will learn how to apply these theories to the practices of the marketing research, advertising strategies, advertising creative and media strategies and so on.
Publishing Management
This course uses the perspectives and methods of system theory and management, from the two aspects of macro publishing industry and micro publishing house. Macro management including legal management, administrative management and industry management, combined with the actual recognize the publishing industry is facing many challenges and the current world publishing industry development trend, and learn from foreign publishing reform advanced experience and management strategies; micro management including strategic management, human resource management, logistics management, a Book quality management, financial management, marketing strategy, copyright trade, digital publishing and new media, are discussed in detail from the planned economy to the market economy and how to establish the publishing house management information system. To study the practical problems in the publishing industry. The purpose of the study is to explore the law of the new period and the way to realize the transformation of traditional publishing industry to the modern publishing industry.
Chinese Language Studies
This course covers Chinese characters studies, Chinese words studies, and Chinese expression studies. The purposes of this course are: introducing Chinese language development and characteristic, as well as comparing Chinese language with other languages especially the letter language. This course helps students understand the uniqueness and particularity of Chinese language thoroughly. It also emphasizes the sense of identity and pride to the nation culture, comprehends the basic characteristics and rules of Chinese words expression, and helps the students finding out vary problems in using Chinese language. Hence, the course is very helpful in using standardized Chinese language and acquiring better communication effects for future work.
